Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You drive toward a railroad crossing. The crossing lights are not flashing, and the gates are up. The line of cars ahead has stopped, and past the far rail there is room for only half of your car. What should you do?
A approaches a crossing with gates raised and lights dark. A stopped queue leaves only half a car length between the far rail and the last car.
Correct answer: Wait before the crossing until there is room for your whole car past the tracks
Why
Trains can come at any time and from either direction, and a train cannot stop quickly. Before you start across, look past the tracks and make sure that there is space for your whole vehicle. The same rule applies at light-rail tracks, such as The Tide in Norfolk: never stop on the tracks. If your car stalls on the tracks, get out at once and move away from the tracks at an angle, toward the direction that the train comes from.
