Passing target: 85% (34/40)
You are first in line at a steady red light and want to turn right. No sign prohibits the turn, and there is no red arrow. The street to your right is clear of cars, bicycles and people. What must you do?
Blue car A approaches an empty intersection at a steady circular red signal and intends to turn right. A remains well before the stop line and crosswalk; no prohibiting sign or nearby road user is shown.
Correct answer: Stop completely, look both ways, then turn if it is still clear
Why
A right turn on red is a turn after a stop, not a turn instead of a stop. Look both ways, and check for vehicles that are harder to see, such as motorcycles, bicycles and mopeds. A NO TURN ON RED sign or a red right arrow means that you must wait for the green. Virginia also allows a left turn on red from a one-way street onto another one-way street, with the same full stop and yield.
