Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
You have parked at the curb on a busy street, and bicyclists often ride past on your side. How should you open the driver's door?
A blue car is parked at the right curb beside a bicycle lane. The driver door is closed and no reaching hand is shown.
Correct answer: Check the mirrors, then open the door with your right hand
Why
This method is called the Dutch Reach. The law says that you may not open a door on the traffic side until it is safe, and you may not leave it open longer than needed. Passengers who get out on the traffic side must check too.
