Your traffic light turns green, and you want to go straight. A pedestrian who started across on the WALK signal is still in the crosswalk ahead of you. The pedestrian signal now shows a steady raised hand (DON'T WALK). What should you do?
A has a green circular light while B is still in the crosswalk ahead after starting on WALK. An enlarged pedestrian signal shows a steady orange raised hand.
Correct answer: Wait for the pedestrian to leave your path, because the pedestrian started on WALK.
Why
The steady raised hand (DON'T WALK) tells pedestrians at the curb not to start across. It does not order a pedestrian who is already crossing to rush out of the way: West Virginia law tells that pedestrian to continue to a sidewalk or safety island. A pedestrian caught in the street by a signal change is exposed to turning and starting traffic, so wait until the pedestrian is clear before you move into the crosswalk.
