Heavy rain leaves standing water on a 55-mph highway. Which action does the most to keep your tires in contact with the road?
A travels on a wet highway with standing water. The card states a 55 mph speed limit, without a selected speed or tire-contact diagram.
Correct answer: Slow down well below 55 mph, because partial hydroplaning can start near 35 mph.
Why
When tires hydroplane, they ride on a film of water, and you cannot brake, speed up or steer well. A gust of wind or a small turn can then start a skid. Tires with deep tread let water escape, so replace tires when the tread-wear indicators show.
