On a highway, a white rectangular sign reads SPEED LIMIT 55. At your exit ramp, a black-on-yellow sign shows 35 MPH. What do the two numbers tell you?
Two signs are shown side by side: a white rectangle reading SPEED LIMIT 55 and a yellow square reading 35 MPH.
Correct answer: 55 is the fastest legal speed in ideal conditions; 35 is the top safe speed advised on the ramp
Why
Regulatory signs, such as SPEED LIMIT signs, are white with black letters, and you must obey them. Advisory speed signs are yellow with black letters; they tell you the speed that is safe on a ramp or a curve. Some speed limit signs also show a minimum speed. Even below the posted limit, you must slow down when weather, traffic or the road make that speed unsafe.
