At 50 mph, your right wheels drop off the pavement onto the shoulder. What should you do?
A’s right wheels are on a lower shoulder at 50 mph. A side-view pavement detail shows the drop; the question includes no return path or braking instruction.
Correct answer: Stay on the shoulder, ease off the gas and brake gently before you steer back.
Why
Grip the steering wheel tightly while you slow down. At low speed, check behind and ahead, turn the wheels sharply onto the pavement, and turn them back as soon as the tires reach the pavement edge. This keeps the car from heading across the highway.
