At night on a dark two-lane road, you use low beams because an oncoming car is about 400 feet away. You notice that you could not stop within the part of the road that your headlights light up. What should you do?
Correct answer: Slow down until you can stop within the area that your headlights light up.
Why
Overdriving your headlights means driving so fast that your stopping distance is longer than the stretch of road your lights show. Low beams light a shorter distance than high beams, so slow down when you must dim them, for example within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle. The fatal crash rate at night is about three times the daytime rate, so match your speed to what you can see.

You start to count "one thousand one, one thousand two," and your front bumper reaches the same sign as you say "two." What does this tell you?You are driving at night in steady rain. The car ahead passes a mile marker, and you reach the marker just as you finish "one thousand three." What is the smallest following gap you should keep in these conditions? At night on a dark two-lane road, you drive with your high beams on about 300 feet behind another car. Then an oncoming car appears about 450 feet ahead of you. What must you do?You drive at night on a rural road with your high beams on. You enter thick fog, and the light seems to bounce back at you as a white glare. What should you do?You drive on a two-lane rural highway outside any town. It is not an Interstate, and you have not seen a speed-limit sign. The road is dry, traffic is light, and you are driving 62 mph. Which statement is correct?
