Weather, Visibility & EmergenciesStandalone practice
Smoke starts to come from under the hood. You pull off the road and turn off the ignition. You see small flames, and you have no chemical fire extinguisher. What should you do?
Correct answer: Smother the flames with dirt or sand, and move 100 feet away if the fire grows.
Why
When smoke comes from the engine area, leave the roadway and switch off the ignition first. Without a chemical fire extinguisher, dirt or sand can smother a small fire, but water can spread a gasoline fire. If the fire gets out of control, move everyone at least 100 feet away, because the gas tank may explode.
