The posted speed limit is 55 mph. You are driving 50 mph on a narrow, winding road, and you are coming up to the top of a hill. You cannot see what is beyond the top. What does West Virginia law require?
Correct answer: Slow to a speed at which you can stop for anything past the hilltop.
Why
The posted limit is the highest speed allowed in good conditions, not a safe speed for every point on the road. West Virginia's basic speed rule says that you must never drive faster than is reasonable for the conditions and hazards, and it names hill crests, curves, intersections and narrow roads as places to slow down. A stopped car or a person can be just past the top of a hill, so your speed must let you stop within the distance you can see.
