Passing target: 80% (24/30)
Traffic in the right lane of an Interstate moves at about 65 mph, and the speed limit is 70 mph. You have found a gap. At what speed should you merge?
A is in an acceleration lane beside Interstate traffic B and C; the card gives 65 mph traffic and a 70 mph limit without selecting A’s speed. The diagram is labeled Not to scale.
Correct answer: About 65 mph, the same speed as the traffic in the lane that you enter.
Why
When your speed matches the traffic flow, the gap that you chose stays open, and drivers in the lane do not have to brake or swerve. Use the full length of the acceleration lane to reach that speed. Do not stop on the ramp or in the acceleration lane; entering traffic from a stop is dangerous and is a last choice when no gap comes.
