At 60 mph, a front tire blows out with a loud bang, and the car pulls hard to one side. What should you do first?
A is still on the highway after a front tire blows out at 60 mph. The card states the hard pull to one side, but shows no corrective route or shoulder exit.
Correct answer: Hold the wheel tightly, steer straight and ease off the gas.
Why
A blowout can make the car swerve without warning. Once you have control again, leave the road completely and stop in a safe place. If you cannot leave the road at once, drive slowly with your emergency flashers on. Underinflated tires are a common cause of blowouts, so check the air pressure often.
