After heavy rain, moving water covers a low part of the road ahead. You cannot tell how deep it is. What should you do?
A approaches moving water that covers both lanes of a low roadway. The water depth and road surface beneath it cannot be seen, and no safe crossing route appears.
Correct answer: Turn around and find another route instead of driving into the water.
Why
Flooded roads are extremely dangerous. About 6 inches of water can float some smaller vehicles, and about 2 feet of water carries most vehicles away. The water can also hide a road that has washed out, and this is harder to see at night. If your vehicle stalls in floodwater, leave it at once and go to higher ground.
