Passing target: 80% (52/65)
You drive on a two-lane city street. Near an intersection, a bicyclist ahead of you signals a left turn and moves from the right edge to the center of your lane. What should you do?
B rides north near the center of A’s lane before an intersection, with the left arm extended. An enlarged detail shows that same left-turn hand signal.
Correct answer: Stay behind the bicyclist, because a rider may move left to prepare for a left turn.
Why
A bicyclist who is slower than traffic usually rides near the right edge. Wisconsin law lets the rider move left to pass, to prepare for a left turn, or to stay away from hazards such as parked cars, holes in the road or a lane that is too narrow to share. Bicyclists can use the whole traffic lane. Learn the bicycle hand signals so that you know what a rider will do.
