You drive your 6-year-old cousin to school. He weighs 45 pounds and is 46 inches tall. How must he ride under Wisconsin law?
Correct answer: In a booster seat or a forward-facing child seat, used as its maker directs.
Why
Generally, Wisconsin children ride in a child safety seat until age 4 and in a booster seat until age 8. A booster seat raises the child so that the adult belt crosses the hips and the center of the chest, not the stomach and the neck. A child younger than 8 may use the adult belt alone only when he or she is heavier than 80 pounds or taller than 57 inches. Always check the height and weight limits of the seat.
