Sam, 19, has just finished a 12-hour night shift. Sam plans to drive 2 hours on the freeway to visit family right after work and feels awake now. What is the safest plan?
Correct answer: Sleep first, then drive, because a long shift with little sleep makes drowsy driving likely.
Why
Drowsy driving happens when a driver is very tired, for example after little sleep, after a long work shift or because of an untreated sleep disorder. A drowsy driver reacts slowly and can fall asleep at the wheel, which is very dangerous at freeway speed. Teen and young adult drivers have a greater risk of drowsy crashes. Sleep well before a long drive, and if drowsiness starts on the way, pull over at a safe place and rest.
