Passing target: 80% (52/65)
You drive toward a four-way stop, where each of the four approaches has a STOP sign. You are the first driver to stop at the intersection. About two seconds later, a car stops at the sign on your right. You both want to go straight. Who should go first, and why?
Two cars have stopped at their own STOP lines on adjacent approaches. A’s card says it stopped first and B stopped two seconds later; B is on A’s right, with both headings straight.
Correct answer: You go first, because you were the first driver to come to a stop at the intersection.
Why
At a four-way stop, every driver must stop fully and then go in turn, in the order of arrival. If two drivers stop at about the same time, the driver on the left lets the driver on the right go first. Before you go, look left, right and left again, because another driver may not follow the rules. Also yield to pedestrians and bicyclists who are still in the intersection.
