Passing target: 80% (52/65)
You drive on a two-lane highway with one lane in each direction. Ahead, a tow truck with flashing red lights is stopped on the shoulder, close to your lane. Oncoming traffic is heavy. What does Wisconsin law require?
A blue car approaches a white tow truck on the right shoulder, its red warning bar active. Two silver oncoming cars occupy the opposite lane.
Correct answer: Slow down, and keep a reduced speed until you are completely past the tow truck.
Why
The Wisconsin move-over law applies when an emergency or roadside service vehicle, or a disabled vehicle, is stopped on the road or within 12 feet of it. On a road with two or more lanes in your direction, move to a lane that is not next to the vehicle when you can do so safely. If you cannot, the law requires a reduced speed until you are completely past. Tow operators and road crews work very close to moving traffic, so the extra time to react can save their lives.
