Passing target: 80% (24/30)
On a dry road in daylight, the car ahead passes a road sign. You count 'one thousand and one,' and the front of your car reaches the sign as you finish. What does this tell you?
A follows B past a fixed roadside sign. A card reports the one-second count given in the question; the drawing does not measure the gap in seconds.
Correct answer: You are too close; drop back to at least two seconds.
Why
The two-second rule is an easy way to check your space cushion at any speed. Start counting when the rear of the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point, and stop when the front of your car reaches it. Double the time at night or on wet roads, triple it on snow, and use eight seconds on ice. Wyoming law forbids following more closely than is reasonable and prudent, and rear-end crashes from tailgating are very common.
