To test how far ahead you usually look, you pick an object where your eyes are focused and count seconds until you reach it. If you scan as far ahead as a defensive driver should, what will your count be?
Correct answer: At least 10, since you should scan 10 to 15 seconds ahead
Why
You react to what you see, so the earlier you see a hazard, the more time you have. Scanning 10 to 15 seconds ahead lets you identify signs, traffic, pedestrians and animals in time to slow down or change position smoothly. If you often must react suddenly, you are probably not looking far enough ahead. Also scan the roadsides for people and animals that could move into your path.
