The posted limit is 60 mph, and the road is covered with packed snow. About what speed should you use?
Correct answer: 30 mph or less, since you should slow by at least half.
Why
Wyoming law requires a speed that is reasonable and prudent for the conditions, even when that is far below the posted limit. On a wet road, the manual advises you to slow by at least 5 to 10 mph. On packed snow, cut your speed at least in half, and on ice, slow to a crawl. Your tires touch the road only in small patches, so snow and ice greatly reduce your grip for steering and stopping.
