P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction

A transmission-side fault. Modern automatics use solenoids, speed sensors, and a transmission control module (TCM). Many shifting-quality complaints (harsh shifts, slipping, no engagement) trace back to one of these subsystems. Most transmission codes warrant a shop visit promptly — continued driving with a slipping or overheating transmission can turn a $400–$800 solenoid into a full rebuild.

Can I keep driving?
Drive home / drive to a shop, but don't ignore it.
DIY difficulty
shop-only
Best handled by a qualified shop.
Typical cost (Canada)
$400 – $3,500 CAD
Parts + labor; varies by shop & vehicle.
Common causes

What usually triggers P0700?

  1. 1Failed shift solenoid or pressure control solenoid
  2. 2Failing input/output speed sensor
  3. 3Low or burnt transmission fluid
  4. 4Internal mechanical wear (clutch packs, bands)
  5. 5TCM software or wiring fault

Causes are listed roughly in order of how often they're seen on Canadian independent-shop tickets. Always confirm with a scan-tool freeze-frame and a circuit/sensor check before replacing parts.
