Passing target: 15 correct signs and 15 correct rules
You see a deer beside the roadway ahead. What is the safest initial response?
Blue car A approaches a deer standing beside the right edge of a rural two-way road. The deer’s hooves are beyond the paved roadway.
Correct answer: Slow down, watch for more deer, and keep a controlled path instead of swerving.
Why
Slow when a deer is near or crosses the road, and scan for others following it. Do not swerve into another lane or off the road. At night, lower the beams to avoid blinding the deer. The handbook says short horn blasts may help move a deer away; do not rely on a horn to make the path safe.
