When may a driver pass another vehicle on the right?
A separated freeway carriageway carries two eastbound lanes beside a median; the other carriageway is outside this view. Blue A is in the right lane, while silver B is farther ahead in the left lane. A continuous white edge line separates the travel lanes from the roadside.
Correct answer: Only when allowed, without leaving the paved roadway.
Why
A safe right-side pass is allowed when the other vehicle is making or about to make a left turn; on an unobstructed paved road with marked lanes for at least two lines of traffic in each direction; or on a sufficiently wide unobstructed one-way roadway. Do not drive off the pavement or the main-traveled part of the roadway to pass. A paved shoulder is not a passing lane.
