When is it generally safe to move back in front of a vehicle you have passed?
A has passed B and remains in the left lane on a northbound road. B is behind in the right lane. The question asks when A may return without showing a mirror detail.
Correct answer: When both of its headlights show in your rear-view mirror.
Why
Seeing both headlights of the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror is the manual’s return-clearance guide. Confirm a generous actual gap, signal and return smoothly. For a pass using the opposing side, Maryland also requires returning as soon as practicable and before coming within 200 feet of an approaching vehicle; the mirror check does not replace that duty.
