You are driving at 55 mph in heavy rain. Suddenly the steering feels light, and the car seems to float on the water. What should you do first?
A moves over standing water on a rainy highway. An enlarged tire detail shows water between the tread and pavement without showing a pedal or steering response.
Correct answer: Take your foot off the gas pedal, and hold the steering wheel steady while the car slows.
Why
At about 35 mph or less, most tires wipe water off the road and keep their grip. At higher speeds, water can build up under the tires and lift them off the road, and in heavy rain a car can start to hydroplane at 35 mph. To prevent it, keep your tires in good condition with deep tread and slow down on wet roads. Water that is deeper than your tread can cause hydroplaning at any speed.
