During a blizzard, your car slides into a ditch on a rural highway. You are not hurt, the engine still runs, and you can see a farm light about a mile away. Help may take hours to arrive. What is the safest plan?
Correct answer: Stay in the car, keep the exhaust pipe clear, and run the engine for short periods with a window partly open.
Why
If you become stranded in cold weather, stay with your vehicle and stay calm. Turn on your hazard warning lights, tie a red flag to the antenna or a door handle, and bring warm clothing and blankets from the trunk into the car. Run the engine and heater until the car is reasonably warm, then turn them off, for about 10 minutes each hour. One person should stay awake at all times, and a winter survival kit in the car makes a long wait much safer.
