Freeways & High-Speed RoadsStandalone practice
You are on a freeway entrance ramp that ends in an acceleration lane. Freeway traffic is moderate. How should you use the acceleration lane?
A travels along an acceleration lane beside through traffic. The lane joins the freeway ahead.
Correct answer: Use it to reach the speed of freeway traffic, signal, and merge into a gap
Why
A freeway merge works best when you arrive at the same speed as the traffic you join, because gaps then stay open long enough to use. Check your mirror and look over your shoulder for an opening while you accelerate, signal, and move over smoothly. Only very heavy traffic makes a stop at the end of the lane necessary.
