Passing target: 80% (20/25)
On a two-lane road, one lane is closed for work. A flagger signals you to stop. After a minute, the oncoming lane looks empty. What should you do?
A approaches a road worker holding a STOP paddle beside a work area.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the flagger signals you to go, then drive slowly past the work area.
Why
A flagging operation is set up when work closes one lane of a two-lane, two-way road, so traffic from each direction takes turns in the lane that is still open. A gap in oncoming traffic does not tell you that the flagger at the far end has held the other direction. In Missouri, failing to stop for a work-zone flagger counts as endangerment of a highway worker, which can add a fine of up to $1,000 and 4 points.
