You are driving in heavy rain on a road with standing water, and you feel your tires lose their grip on the pavement. What should you do?
A travels through standing water on a rain-soaked road. The neutral card states that its tires have lost their grip.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and keep the steering wheel straight until the tires grip again.
Why
On a wet road, most tires grip well up to about 35 mph, but at higher speeds they can rise up onto the water and lose contact with the pavement. In heavy rain, tires can lose all grip at about 50 mph, and bald or badly worn tires lose it at lower speeds. The best defense is to slow down whenever the road is wet.
