Turns, Lanes, Passing & MergingStandalone practice
On a two-lane highway you want to pass a slow truck. A hill crest ahead blocks your view of oncoming traffic. According to the manual, you should not start to pass if the hill is closer than about what distance?
A follows a truck toward a hill crest. A side profile shows the hidden roadway beyond the crest.
Correct answer: One-third of a mile
Why
At 55 mph a pass takes about 10 seconds, and you and an oncoming vehicle each travel over 800 feet in that time, so you need about 1,600 feet of clear road. Montana law forbids driving on the left side when approaching the crest of a hill or a curve where your view is blocked. Oncoming cars far away often look as if they are standing still, which makes gaps hard to judge.
