Weather, Visibility & EmergenciesStandalone practice
You are driving with your headlights on in thick fog, and you can see only about 200 feet ahead. What is the highest speed at which you can still drive safely?
A drives with its headlights on into fog. A card states that visibility ahead is 200 feet.
Correct answer: About 30 mph, the speed at which you can stop within about 200 feet
Why
With good tires and brakes on dry pavement, it takes about 200 feet to react and stop from 30 mph and about 400 feet from 50 mph, and a wet road needs even more room. Keep your headlights on in rain, fog, or snow so that other drivers can see you. You can get a ticket for driving too fast for the conditions even below the posted limit.
