You are first in line at a red light. The light turns green, but a pedestrian is still finishing the crossing in front of you, and a car from the cross street is still clearing the intersection. What should you do?
A’s signal is green, but a pedestrian is finishing the crosswalk ahead and B is still clearing the intersection from the cross street.
Correct answer: Wait until both have cleared, and look left and right before you enter the intersection.
Why
A green light means you may go if the roadway is clear. The first seconds after a light changes need extra care: people and cars that started on the previous signal may still be crossing, and a driver on the cross street may run the red light. Do not rely on the signal alone.
