At a marked crosswalk in the middle of a block, the pedestrian hybrid beacon over the road shows its two red lights flashing back and forth. What must you do?
Two successive views of a pedestrian hybrid beacon show its upper red lights lit in turn, while the lower yellow lamp is dark.
Correct answer: Stop, then go only after making sure no pedestrian is in your lane or the next lane.
Why
A pedestrian hybrid beacon is dark between uses. When a pedestrian needs to cross, it shows flashing yellow, then steady yellow, then two steady red lights, when you must stop and stay stopped while people walk. When the red lights flash back and forth, pedestrians see a flashing DON'T WALK, and you may continue after stopping if no one is crossing in your lane or the next one. When the beacon goes dark again you do not have to stop, because the dark-signal stop rule does not apply to these midblock beacons, but you must still yield to anyone in the crosswalk.
