Passing target: 80% (20/25)
On a dry road, the car ahead of you passes a road sign. You count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two," and your front bumper reaches the same sign. What does this tell you?
A’s front bumper is beside a fixed roadside sign on a dry two-way road. B is farther ahead; the card gives a two-second interval between their front bumpers passing the sign.
Correct answer: You are following too closely and should slow down until the gap is at least three seconds.
Why
To use the rule, pick a fixed object such as a sign, overpass or fence post, and start counting when the vehicle ahead passes it. Because the rule uses time, not distance, it gives you more space at higher speeds, when you need more room to stop. This cushion gives you time to react to an emergency and avoid a rear-end crash.
