Passing target: 80% (20/25)
You drive in the right lane of a freeway that has two lanes in your direction. A police car with flashing lights is stopped on the right shoulder ahead. The left lane is clear. What should you do?
Blue A approaches a stopped emergency vehicle on the right shoulder of a two-lane same-direction highway. Red and blue warning lights are stated and visible.
Correct answer: Slow down, be ready to stop, and move to the left lane if you can do it safely.
Why
The move-over rule protects officers, tow operators, road crews and stranded drivers who work a few feet from moving traffic. It also covers a tow truck, road crew or utility vehicle with flashing amber lights, a crash scene, a stalled vehicle, debris on the road and a person who repairs a vehicle at the roadside. If an officer at the scene gives you directions, follow the officer.
