You are driving at 50 mph in heavy rain. The steering suddenly feels light, as if the tires are floating on the water. What should you do?
Blue A is on a highway in heavy rain, with standing water on the pavement. The caption describes light steering and floating.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and slow down gradually, with no hard braking.
Why
Most cars can start to hydroplane between 35 and 55 mph in heavy rain, and when they do, you lose control. The best defense is to slow down in heavy rain before the tires lose their grip. Also leave extra space, because wet roads can more than double your stopping distance.
