The temperature is below freezing. The road has been clear where the sun hits it, but ahead it goes into the shade of a hill. What should you do?
Blue A approaches a shaded road section in below-freezing conditions. The sunny road behind it has been clear.
Correct answer: Slow down before you reach the shade, and then brake, steer and accelerate gently there.
Why
In freezing weather, ice often stays in shaded places after the sunny parts of the road are dry. Nevada law requires you to slow down for weather and road conditions, even below the posted limit, and no speed is fully safe on snow and ice. Start to slow down early for curves, turns and intersections. If your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS), use firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal instead of pumping it.
