You brake hard while towing a trailer. In your mirror, you see the trailer start to swing out of your lane. What should you do?
Blue towing vehicle A has braked hard and its attached empty trailer starts to swing out toward the road edge. The trailer’s front remains coupled.
Correct answer: Release the brakes, so that the trailer wheels can grip the road again.
Why
Your mirrors give the earliest warning that a trailer has started to skid, so check them whenever you brake hard. Once a trailer swings out of its lane, a jackknife is very hard to prevent. A trailer skid is more likely when the trailer is empty or lightly loaded, so brake early and keep a large gap.
