You are hitching a trailer with a ball-and-hitch coupler. How should you connect the safety chains?
A close view shows the trailer’s closed ball coupler. The wider safety-chain connections are outside this neutral detail.
Correct answer: Attach them crossed, with enough slack for turns, but not so loose that they drag.
Why
If the ball and coupler separate, crossed chains can catch the trailer tongue and help keep the trailer attached. Test the hitch by pulling forward gently in low gear against the locked trailer brakes, and then look at the connection. On a long trip, check the hitch and the load again within the first 50 miles, and again after 3 hours or 150 miles.
