After a summer storm, water is flowing across the road ahead of you. It looks only a few inches deep, and there is no barricade. What should you do?
Blue A approaches water flowing across a two-lane road after a storm. No continuing rain or known depth is shown.
Correct answer: Turn around and take another route, or wait for the water to go down.
Why
It is hard to judge how deep floodwater is, and the road under it may have washed away. More than half of flash-flood deaths involve vehicles, and most vehicles can float in water 2 feet deep or less. Never drive around a barricade: Nevada law bans driving on a road that is barricaded as closed, and a driver who goes through a flood roadblock can be billed for the rescue.
