Your car has a forward collision warning system. On the highway, it beeps and flashes because the traffic ahead has slowed sharply. What does the system do, and what must you do?
Correct answer: It only warns you; you must brake or steer yourself to avoid the vehicle ahead.
Why
Most vehicle warning systems are passive: they alert you by sound, light or vibration but do not prevent the crash. The manual says not to become complacent or dependent on them, and to keep using mirrors, head checks and a safe following distance. Read the owner's manual to learn what your vehicle's systems can and cannot do.
