Passing target: 80% (32/40)
On a dry, clear day, the car ahead of you passes a road sign. You count "one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two" and then reach the same sign. What should you do?
A follows B on a dry road beside a fixed roadside sign. The card gives A’s current following-time count as two seconds.
Correct answer: Slow down, then count again at another fixed point until the gap is at least four seconds.
Why
A time gap gives you room to see a problem, react and brake, and it gets longer in feet as your speed increases. To check it, note when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point such as a sign or pole, and count the seconds until you reach the same point. Four seconds is the minimum in good conditions; bad weather, darkness or a large vehicle ahead call for more.
