Passing target: 80% (32/40)
Heavy snow covers a road with a posted limit of 45 mph. You can see only about 100 feet ahead, and your tires slip when you brake. You drive at 40 mph. Which statement is correct?
Heavy snow hides the road ahead of A. The fact card states the 45 mph posted limit, A’s 40 mph speed, about 100 feet of visibility and tires slipping under braking.
Correct answer: 40 mph is unlawful, because it is not reasonable and prudent here
Why
The posted number is the most you may drive when the road, weather and traffic are ideal. The law also says that you must control your speed so that you can avoid a collision, and that you must slow down near curves, hilltops, intersections and railroad crossings and when weather creates a hazard. In snow, slow down early, leave more space and brake gently.
