Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You are leaving a shopping-center driveway. A public sidewalk crosses the driveway, and after it you will turn onto a busy street. What does New Jersey law require?
A approaches a public sidewalk across a shopping-center driveway. A busy street lies beyond the sidewalk, with B travelling along it; no stop positions are selected yet.
Correct answer: Stop before the sidewalk and yield to walkers, then stop and yield to street traffic before you enter.
Why
Drivers who come out of driveways, alleys, garages and parking lots often have a poor view of the sidewalk and of the road. The manual lists coming out of an alley, private driveway or building among the places where a motorist must stop, and it says that a driver from a private road or driveway yields to all traffic on the main road. Two separate checks, one for walkers and one for road traffic, prevent the two most common driveway crashes.
