A center lane has a solid and a dashed yellow line on each side, with left-turn arrows painted for both directions. How may you use this lane?
A and B approach from opposite directions beside a shared center lane. Its edges have solid and dashed yellow lines, with left-turn arrows for both directions.
Correct answer: Only to prepare for and make a left turn, or a U-turn where allowed.
Why
A shared center lane, also called a two-way left-turn lane, is used by drivers from both directions to make left turns, or U-turns where permitted. New Mexico law says you may not use it to pass, may not drive in it for more than 200 feet before turning, and may not turn left from another lane where one is provided. A driver turning left onto the road may stop in it to wait for a gap before merging.
