Your car's turn-signal lights have stopped working, and you need to turn left at the next corner. Which hand-and-arm signal should you give?
Three views of a driver’s left arm are numbered 1, 2 and 3: straight outward, elbow bent upward, and elbow bent downward.
Correct answer: Put your left arm straight out the window, level with the road.
Why
All three hand signals are given with the left arm from the driver's side: straight out for a left turn, bent upward for a right turn, and pointed down to stop or slow down. The manual shows the same signals in its bicycle section, so learn to recognize them when a bicyclist uses them too. Give the hand signal over at least the last 100 feet before the turn, the same as a signal light.
