Passing target: 70% (21/30)
You are on a road with three lanes going your way, and you want to move from the right lane into the center lane. Which order of steps is safest?
A is in the right lane of a three-lane freeway. The center lane and far-left lane are both visible.
Correct answer: Check mirrors, signal, look over your shoulder and at the far lane, then move over.
Why
New Mexico law says you may not move out of your lane until you have first made sure the move can be made safely, and it requires a signal when other traffic may be affected. Keep each glance away from the road ahead short, because traffic in front of you can stop while you look to the side. The same checks apply when you merge from an entrance ramp or pull away from the curb or shoulder. After the lane change, make sure your signal has turned off.
