Passing target: 70% (21/30)
You approach a railroad crossing that has no gate. The two red lights beside the crossbuck start to flash in turn, but you cannot see a train. What must you do?
A approaches a railroad crossing from well before the tracks. The red warning lamps alternate, no gate is present and no train is visible.
Correct answer: Stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail and stay stopped while the lights flash.
Why
A train is large and can be much closer and faster than it looks, and you must yield to it at every crossing. After the lights stop and you have looked both ways, cross only if your whole vehicle can clear the tracks without stopping on them. If a bell or horn sounds at the crossing, wait until it stops before you cross. Do not shift gears while you are on the tracks, so the engine does not stall there.
