Passing target: 70% (21/30)
Traffic is moving slowly. The car ahead of you crosses the railroad tracks and stops. There is not enough room behind it for your whole car, and the crossing signals are not flashing. What should you do?
A approaches railroad tracks with both warning lamps dark. B has stopped just past the far rail, leaving a space shorter than A behind it.
Correct answer: Stop before the tracks, and cross only when you can clear them without stopping.
Why
Drivers get trapped on crossings when they follow slow traffic onto the tracks. NMSA 66-7-341 lets a driver go through a crossing only when the vehicle can pass completely through it without stopping, and it forbids driving onto a crossing and stopping. Look across the tracks before you start, and wait behind the stop point if the space on the far side is too short. The manual also advises a longer following gap, about four seconds, as you approach a crossing.
